Imagine this: It's a beautiful sunny day, and you're eager to enjoy some quality time (and a cold beer) at your favourite local pub. But what about the dog? Bring him/her with you!
Gertie at the bar
With the increasing number of pet owners, many pubs have recognised the importance of catering to canine customers. Some have designated dog-friendly areas, where you and your Bergamasco can relax together. Some pubs may include water bowls, dog treats, or even special dog menus. Before heading out, it's advisable to check with the pub if they allow dogs and if there are any specific guidelines to follow.

The pub can be a great place and opportunity to socialise your Bergamasco. We got our wonderful Bergamasco, Gertie during the first Covid lockdown and we missed essential puppy school training where we could socialise her with people and other dogs. People were avoiding each other in the streets and she clearly picked up on that vibe. She wouldn't let anyone she didn't know near her let alone allow them to stroke her. We decided to do some training with her and took her to a local ringcraft class where she quickly learned to enjoy the company of other dogs, however, she would NOT let the judge go anywhere near her. So....... I took her to the pub.

Taking your Bergamasco to the pub provides an excellent opportunity for socialisation. Dogs are social creatures, and exposing them to different environments, people, and other dogs can help them become well-rounded and confident. The pub setting allows them to interact with new faces, receive pets and belly rubs, and enjoy the crazy attention Bergamasco's always get. Some might even call taking the dog to the pub "Training".

Gertie quickly got used to meeting other people and eventually the breakthrough came. She started to allow strangers to stroke her and she even began to enjoy it! Sure, she is still wary of strangers (Bergamascos are meant to be) but after a quick sniff she realises they're a friend.
This dedicated approach to "training" meant that for Gerties welfare and confidence it was essential that I took her to the pub at least twice a week! She now loves to go to the pub and she has built up quite a reputation in the village. The only negative? She's never bought a round! (more training is clearly needed).

So, raise a glass, share a laugh, and enjoy the pub experience with your loyal companion by your side! Cheers to dog-friendly pubs!
