COAT FAQ's

Questions you will be frequently asked

Can they see?

Yes, very well in fact. They will spot what’s going on across field.  The fringe sits over the Bergamascos long eye lashes and protects the eyes from the elements.  Originally as an alpine herding breed it was thought to also protect from sun blindness as the sun reflected on the snow. However, they may be weary of surprise hands suddenly coming from above their fringe.

Do the get hot?

Being an Italian breed the Bergamasco copes well in the heat of the British climate and this is not usually a problem.

Does the coat smell?

Usually no! but as with all dogs if they urinate on the coat or roll in muck, they will need a spot wash. The long adult coat can be tied up to avoid urine areas if necessary.

Is the coat antiallergy?

Most people with allergies to dogs do not react to the Bergamasco coat.  However, it is best to spend time with an adult dog to make sure.

Does the coat need regular clipping?

The coat never requires a regular full clip like other types of breeds. In fact it is the opposite, a slow growing coat which takes several years to grow into the adult coat that the Bergamasco is famous for.

Is the coat hard to groom?

Yes and no.  The coat requires a lot of attention, especially during the adolescent stage, however, once the coat has been set, grooming is minimal.

Do you get lots of questions about the coat?

All the time!  One of the characteristics of owning a Bergamasco is that you will be asked questions.  Lots of them.  The general public are so genuinely fascinated by the unique coat and you will be asked numerous questions about the breed and coat care.  It's relentless!  Most Bergamasco have a fun personality to match their coat so they end up being local celebrities.
