Caring for an adult Bergamasco requires some of the same considerations as caring for a puppy, but there are also some additional factors to keep in mind. Here are some tips for caring for an adult Bergamasco:

  • Grooming: The Bergamasco's coat requires regular maintenance throughout their adult life. One of the common questions you will get asked about your Bergamasco is how difficult is it to groom.  The truth is that it's fairly easy.  The flocks need to be kept clean and may require seperating.  Particular attention needs to be given around the ears, eyes and chin.  Ideally these should be brushed regularly and without flocks.  It's not always easy keeping your Bergamasco clean so from time to time a bath may be required.  Just bear in mind they can take a long time to dry!  For specific grooming advice please visit our grooming page.

  • Exercise: As a working breed, Bergamascos require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Aim for at least 30-60 minutes of exercise daily, which can include activities like walking, running, hiking, or playing fetch.  The Bergamasco is used to tending to its flock high up in the Alps so it will happily go on long hikes.  In fact, it's an ideal breed for thoe who love to be out in the fresh air. It's important to ensure that your Bergamasco has plenty of opportunities for physical and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior.

  • Diet: Provide your Bergamasco with a high-quality, well-balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. Be sure to monitor their weight and adjust their diet and exercise accordingly to maintain a healthy weight.  Dietry advice and recommended products can be found in the dietary section.

  • Health care: Like all dogs, Bergamascos require regular veterinary checkups, vaccinations, and parasite prevention. Keep up-to-date with their vaccinations and schedule regular check-ups to monitor their health. Whilst the Bergamasco is an exceptionally healthy breed, some are prone to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia, so it's important to watch for signs of pain or discomfort and seek veterinary care as needed.

  • Socialization: Socialization is important for adult Bergamascos as well. It's important to continue to expose them to different people, animals, and environments to keep them comfortable and well-adjusted in different situations.

By providing proper grooming, exercise, diet, health care, and socialization, you can help ensure that your adult Bergamasco is healthy, happy, and well-behaved.
